American Academy of Art Students Fare Well
in the Annual Society of Illustrators Student Competition
Six works from four Academy students were picked to be included
in the 2007 Society of Illustrators Annual Student Show. This Juried competition
is open to all art students at the college level. From over 4700 entrants,
23 works are picked to receive scholarship prizes, and a total of 119
pieces are included in the show.
Sam Balfour, a 2006 graduate of the American Academy of Art, received
a $3000 “Award in Memory of Phil Hays” in the 2007 Society
of Illustrators Student Scholarship Competition. Balfour’s piece,
titled “Thom York” is a 11” x 14” digitally created
piece done in Photoshop. Sam also had a second work picked to be shown
in the annual Student Show at the Society of Illustrators in New York,
NY. Balfour received his BFA in Illustration in May 2006 at the American
Academy of Art’s Graduation Ceremony. Current Academy senior Andrew
Day, and sophomore Christina Beller each had two pieces each accepted
into the show, and 2006 Academy graduate Phil El Rassi had one piece accepted.
Along with being in the Annual Student Show, the winners are represented
in a full-color promotional catalog as well as being included in Illustrators
48 Annual, a annual publication that showcases the year’s best illustration.
