Elvgren, Gil
GIL ELVGREN who received his degree from the American Academy of Art
in
1936 and also taught at the Academy in 1940 is best known as a pin-up
and
glamour artist. For over thirty years, Elvgren worked for Brown and
Bigelow, calendar publishers of St. Paul, Minnesota creating pin-ups.
Elvgren did advertising work for Coca-Cola, which included not only his
signature “Elvgren Girls”, but also scenes of typical American
families,
which eventually became acknowledged icons of American life. He also
produced advertising work for Orange Crush, Schlitz Beer, Sealy Mattress,
General Electric, Sylvania and Napa Auto Parts. He also completed many
publishing assignments for such magazines as McCall’s, Cosmopolitan,
Good
Housekeeping, Redbook, Woman’s Home Companion and Saturday Evening
